Trains have always fascinated me with their honest mechanical systems in plain view and the way the ground shakes as they pass by. I was looking through my portfolio and I found this old friend I painted a few years back and it reminded me of how unique, beautiful and timeless steam engines are.

First Day of Creation
As I imagine the 1st day of the created earth, I always think of how dramatic and beautiful the rotating water and materials of the brand new earth would have appeared from space. I see water being pulled into the gravitational field of the earth and beginning to form the final spherical shape.

My original idea for this painting was more realistic. But as the painting progressed, the mists in the canyons suggested an abstraction of clouds or fog or waterfalls. At that point, since it was water that formed the walls of the Grand Canyon, I decided to leave it more undefined and let the …
