I have experimented with a fairly wide variety of media and have basically settled on acrylic on canvas as a comfortable medium for me. Acrylics dry fast, don’t have a turpentine smell and allow transparent layering and build up between layers like no other medium.
Also if an acrylic painting is really turning into a multicolored disaster, you can simply put a layer of gesso over the thing, paint over it, and in 10 minutes, no one will ever know.
I also paint in watercolor because it can give you an airbrush effect and create a softer somewhat spontaneous looking result.
I also use oil paint in some applications where I don’t have a tight deadline because of the need for drying time. I also sometimes use an acrylic underpainting and finish in oils to speed up the process.
